Cappies
What? An organization that works with KC’s high school drama departments to watch and review each other’s theatrical productions
When? All year; various meetings throughout the year; usually productions are of Friday or Saturday nights.
Where? Various locations around the city; students usually carpool
Fees? None
Time commitment? At least 5 shows must be reviewed per year (shows usually start around 7 pm and last for a few hours).
Qualifications? Students interested in joining need to submit a sample of an original review they’ve written about a movie or play they’ve seen. The best reviews are anonymously selected
Summer activities? A large production for all Cappies from different schools is available if covid allows (further information pending)
Covid? Cappies will adhere to CHS and CDC guidelines (further information pending)
Extra? Cappies is a team and once a student commits the other members rely on them to follow through. It is highly student-run.
HiveTV
What? Livestreams sports, announcements, and special events. Creates videos for YouTube and the school district’
When? All year; Exact times and days vary depending on the event being streamed
Where? Media center (library)
Fees? None
Time commitment? Varies depending on their job within the team; could be a few time a month or a few times a week
Qualifications? All students need to cover all events they say they’re going to cover.
Summer activities? Possibly a summer camp before school starts (further information pending)
Covid? It’s reduced their ability to pre-produce videos but has not stopped them from streaming live
Extra? Lets students document their High School experiences through video and be highly involved with the school. The video production class is not required to join.

What? Discusses current events, political issues, and government philosophies. Participates in friendly debates. Prepares for the Missouri Youth in Government Conference by writing mock bills and arguing moot trials. Has taken trips to the Nelson Art Museum in the past.

What? A group of students that are put together to allow students to give feedback to the administration

Support Groups
What? Engage with fellow students and group facilitators over weekly topics. The main goal is to build resilience skills and offer general support.

Yearbook
What? Students work together to create a book of high school memories. They use photography, design, writing, and marketing skills.
When? All year until about March; in a class for juniors and seniors; potentially one day after school if students are interested

Fees? $15 for t-shirts
Time commitment? A year-long class and plenty of work outside of school to ensure a high-quality yearbook

Covid? Workshops will be virtual so field trips will be limited; the class is not as hands-on as it would be

Black Student Union (BSU)
What? A place for students to discuss life, culture, and current events. Has guest speakers, poetry slams, and other events.

Extra? Typically completing 4-5 service projects per semester. Project examples include: care packages for the homeless, food drives, school supply drives, and more!
National Honor Society (NHS)
What? A volunteer organization that recognizes exemplary students and serves their community in a variety of ways.
When? All year; 1-2 projects in fall; welcoming new inductees in winter; and new projects and preparations for the next year in spring; meeting times to be determined

Time commitments? At least 20 hours per semester on volunteering
Qualifications? Juniors and Seniors only; must have attended CHS for 1 year before applying; GPA above 3.7; volunteer hours (number varies; go with more rather than less); leadership roles

Covid? They couldn’t do some volunteer opportunities, so they had to find other ways
Extra? Students must prepare during 9th and 10th grade; many students aren’t accepted their junior year; they can reapply their senior year
